Safe Travels During the Covid-19 Season

For starters, I would like to get my disclaimer out of the way by saying that  I am not a doctor and I do not play one on the internet. I am a traveler who has had the opportunity to visit countries such as Israel, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and many others. During my travels, I have gathered some good  tips on how to travel safely.  A few of these life lessons have come in handy during this Covid-19 season. Take Sanitizer This may sound like common sense, but I am not referring to hand sanitizer only. My wife and I have made it a habit to take a bottle of  sanitizing cleaner or Lysol spray  when we go on trips. Before we unload our luggage, we do a thorough cleaning of any surfaces that we routinely touch. This includes any  high-traffic areas such as doorknobs, handles, and countertop surfaces .  Plan outdoor activities  We recently went on a six-night trip, and every day we planned outdoor activities. For your next trip, think outdoors;  ...

Stay Positive for a Healthier Heart.

While it is important to remember to eat healthily and get exercise whenever possible,    those things are not the only factors in having a healthy and well-functioning heart.   This article is a simple reminder that your OWN MIND can also be a contributing factor to your heart health.     Yes, your own mind.    The things you think about and focus on can have a detrimental or positive effect on your physical body.   People who worry often or stress over day-to-day life will eventually begin to notice outward effects on their own bodies.   Outward meaning physical, which includes the organs as well, including the heart.      When a person is experiencing prolonged stress, chemicals are released into the body simply from THINKING a certain way.   These chemicals can be good or bad depending on the emotion that is invoked by a particular thought.    ...

Mesothelioma - Am I at Risk

Mesothelioma, what is it and am I at risk.  Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that is mostly found in the pleural lining of the lungs.  It can also be found in the lining around the abdomen and heart. Those diagnosed with testicular Mesothelioma account for only less than 1% of the patient population.  The inhalation of Asbestos gave rise to the incurable disease that we are now facing in our aging population.      You may ask yourself, well am I at risk ?  You have very good cause to be concerned if you are a new baby boomer.  This is because earlier years of asbestos exposure has a 20 to 50 year latency period before cancer symptoms begin to appear.  Even when these symptoms do appear most people are already in stage III of the disease.  These symptoms mimic many others that appear with respiratory and cardiac disorders, and do not become apparent until usually after the tumors have spread, grown, and causes pain in t...

Mobility Couldn't be Easier

As we age getting around and doing the things we want and need to do can be tiresome and difficult.  Today mobility couldn't be easier.  With all of the options and prices of mobility products almost everyone can afford one of the products to make their life easier.  Don't get me wrong, the first choice is exercise as a lifestyle choice.  This is the cheapest and best option for an independent life.  Some people have medical conditions that are unavoidable which have prevented them from maintaining strength and endurance.  Others have the ability and strength to get around but may lack the endurance.  I took my mother shopping the other day at her request, however, I noticed not long after arriving at the store she looked tired.  With no where to sit and rest I call it an early day and we went home.  I could tell she was relieved, but she never complained.  Here are some options that are affordable and I will tell y...

What is Cognitive Impairment?

What is cognitive impairment and how does it affect you.  More importantly, what can be done about it.  Dealing with the physical changes that occur as we age is bad enough, but the mental decline that we experience can be even worse to accept.  Maybe we don't have to give in to decline in the age of new research on the growing population of baby boomers.      So exactly what is cognitive impairment?  According to the CDC, cognitive impairment manifest itself when one has trouble remembering or learning new things.  Another sign of cognitive impairment is a decline in concentration or decision making affecting ones life.  These deficiencies can be mild or severe.  With mild cases one can usually tell that they have impaired cognitive function but can still manage their everyday activities.   With more severe cases, the person may not be able to live independently any longer.      Another downsi...
