A Senior Citizen Age varies Among the Masses

     With so many baby boomers retiring, many people question when there are considered a senior citizen. A senior citizens age has traditionally been considered when an individual reaches the age of 65 now 66.  That's the magic number when full retirement kicks in and one can expect to start receiving a check while enjoying their golden years.  Many things put off during working years can now be pursued and enjoyed.

     Due to a healthier and more active generation the term senior citizen tends to leave a bad taste in many people's mouth.  More and more people are active and healthier today than ever.  With all the advancements in medicine and widespread availability of health care people are living a more healthier and active life.  Due to this increase in life expectancy, the federal government has passed legislation to have the retirement age increased to 67 by the year 2027.

woman on golf cart with her dog      Where does the expression senior citizen come from anyways.  It was a term used in a 1938 political campaign as a euphemism for old age.   96% of 50 year olds reject the phrase senior citizen as describing them.  Even individuals over 65 reject this as applying to them.  This is a picture of me and I am 50+, but I have no intention of popping out my ID just yet to take advantage of the savings.  Those that embrace the senior movement do so for economic reasons.  Many companies give discounts to senior citizens as a courtesy for there business.  One of the first offers is the dreaded mail you receive from the AARP.  I have yet to return the acceptance letter for my membership for their discounts and my free backpack.  Just not ready to go there yet as I am so full of life and can still hike 10+ miles a day.  Either way, there are some good deals that can be taken advantage of if your ready to give up and give in.
   
     Still other government agencies mark 60 as the definitive date to qualify for housing and other perks.  The United Nations also defines 60 as the senior citizen status.  Either way, lifestyle choice and improved health care is redefining what is considered a universal senior citizen age determination.  Technical there is no set number when trying to decide what category you fit into at this time in your life.  For those that embrace the term senior citizen and all the perks it can hold as far as discounts.  My next post, I will try to provide you with a comprehensive list of discounts available for senior citizens and their spouses.  Better yet, I found this site that cover that subject very well called Free4Seniors.
