Mobility Couldn't be Easier

   
 As we age getting around and doing the things we want and need to do can be tiresome and difficult.  Today mobility couldn't be easier.  With all of the options and prices of mobility products almost everyone can afford one of the products to make their life easier.  Don't get me wrong, the first choice is exercise as a lifestyle choice.  This is the cheapest and best option for an independent life.  Some people have medical conditions that are unavoidable which have prevented them from maintaining strength and endurance.  Others have the ability and strength to get around but may lack the endurance.  I took my mother shopping the other day at her request, however, I noticed not long after arriving at the store she looked tired.  With no where to sit and rest I call it an early day and we went home.  I could tell she was relieved, but she never complained.  Here are some options that are affordable and I will tell you what they are capable of performing.  
     Powered wheelchairs are usually covered by Medicare.  These usually can be operated electrically or manually if the power is running out.  They can come in different models and sizes to fit your physique.  Here are just a few.  For more information just click on the picture to learn more about these products.






     A step up can be the mobility of a scooter.  Three wheeled scooters perform better inside the home, whereas those with four wheels can handle the sometime difficult terrain of the outdoors.  Both models come in folding versions making them easy to transport.  Others require lifts to get them in and out of the car.  Either way you can find a fit for your situation.  Here are some of the scooter versions and some can be purchased for less than a thousand dollars.




     In the last picture the scooter is only $649 making this very affordable for many people.  I don't know why the link came out so small but it is an attractive scooter that is very affordable.  I hope you find one you like that helps you get back out and start enjoying the great outdoors.  One of these is in my mothers future too.  When I decide on the model, I will update post and let you know her experience with her scooter.

What is Cognitive Impairment?

     What is cognitive impairment and how does it affect you.  More importantly, what can be done about it.  Dealing with the physical changes that occur as we age is bad enough, but the mental decline that we experience can be even worse to accept.  Maybe we don't have to give in to decline in the age of new research on the growing population of baby boomers.

     So exactly what is cognitive impairment?  According to the CDC, cognitive impairment manifest itself when one has trouble remembering or learning new things.  Another sign of cognitive impairment is a decline in concentration or decision making affecting ones life.  These deficiencies can be mild or severe.  With mild cases one can usually tell that they have impaired cognitive function but can still manage their everyday activities.   With more severe cases, the person may not be able to live independently any longer.


     Another downside to cognitive impairment is the cost.  People with a cognitive impairment have 3 times the hospital visits than those with other ailments.  This doesn't include all of the unpaid care that occurs in the homes of those taking care of these individuals.  Now is the time that we need to be proactive in preventing the onset of dementia by instituting a healthy lifestyle and exercising our brain


     This is according to the National Institute of Health.


Research has identified lifestyle practices such as education, leisure pursuits, intellectual engagement, and expertise that are associated with successfully maintenance of cognitive abilities. Physical activity, diet, and social activity are additional factors linked to maintained cognition in aging that have been used as a basis for interventions to prevent cognitive decline."


     The MacArthur Study on Successful Aging concluded that those individuals with a more mentally demanding career maintain higher acuity as they aged.  The study also illustrate that socioeconomic status and life experience effects cognitive function in the older adult.  This year an article published by Harvard Medical School in their health publication gave examples on how learning new information can slow cognitive decline.  Going back to school was one way to exercise your brain.  In this article they linked back to this site for your educational exploration.  Another article was published a week before that in Harvard's Women Health Watch explores how a four part combination strategy can stave off cognitive impairment.  Diet, exercise, socializing, and challenging your brain all play a significant part in your outcome.  These are two great resource to learn more.  So challenge your brain today.  Learn a new subject, spend time playing a game (chess), get out and visit the world, and eat right and get plenty of exercise and rest.  These can be some of the best years in life when done right.


A Senior Citizen Age Varies among the Masses

     With so many baby boomers retiring, many people question when there are considered a senior citizen. A senior citizens age has traditionally been considered when an individual reaches the age of 65 now 66.  That's the magic number when full retirement kicks in and one can expect to start receiving a check while enjoying their golden years.  Many things put off during working years can now be pursued and enjoyed.

     Due to a healthier and more active generation the term senior citizen tends to leave a bad taste in many people's mouth.  More and more people are active and healthier today than ever.  With all the advancements in medicine and widespread availability of health care people are living a more healthier and active life.  Due to this increase in life expectancy, the federal government has passed legislation to have the retirement age increased to 67 by the year 2027.

woman on golf cart with her dog      Where does the expression senior citizen come from anyways.  It was a term used in a 1938 political campaign as a euphemism for old age.   96% of 50 year olds reject the phrase senior citizen as describing them.  Even individuals over 65 reject this as applying to them.  This is a picture of me and I am 50+, but I have no intention of popping out my ID just yet to take advantage of the savings.  Those that embrace the senior movement do so for economic reasons.  Many companies give discounts to senior citizens as a courtesy for there business.  One of the first offers is the dreaded mail you receive from the AARP.  I have yet to return the acceptance letter for my membership for their discounts and my free backpack.  Just not ready to go there yet as I am so full of life and can still hike 10+ miles a day.  Either way, there are some good deals that can be taken advantage of if your ready to give up and give in.
   
     Still other government agencies mark 60 as the definitive date to qualify for housing and other perks.  The United Nations also defines 60 as the senior citizen status.  Either way, lifestyle choice and improved health care is redefining what is considered a universal senior citizen age determination.  Technical there is no set number when trying to decide what category you fit into at this time in your life.  For those that embrace the term senior citizen and all the perks it can hold as far as discounts.  My next post, I will try to provide you with a comprehensive list of discounts available for senior citizens and their spouses.  Better yet, I found this site that cover that subject very well called Free4Seniors.

Apps for Senior Citizens

    Didn't think the new technology out today could be for you.  Think again.  There are many new apps that are out that can help you with your day to day task.  Even the guys will like some of these.  So lets get started.

  1. ParKing (Google Playstore)  QuickPark (App Store)
Download either of these that are compatible with your cellphone or device and never search for your car again.  These can be used offline as well with maps that will get you back to your automobile in a flash.

   2. Pillboxie ( Google Playstore)  Pill Reminder (App Store)

Easy to use apps never let you forget to take your medication again. You can use these apps to set the time and date and it will display a picture of the pill as well as the name and dose.  These apps will let you know when it is time to reorder your medication and they will allow you to keep in touch with your doctor.

   3. Optical Eyeglasses ( Google Playstore)  Pocket Glasses ( App Store)

Forgot your glasses.  No problem.  See menus and read prescription bottles without having to ask anyone for help.  You can also use these to read signs and zoom in on objects when repairing your eyeglasses for instance.  Includes a flashlight when you just need more clarity.  This app is a must have.

   4.  bSafe  and SafeTrek  (Google Playstore)  EmergenSee (App Store)

A very necessary tool for any age group.  Keep yourself safe when you find that you have wondered into a bad situation or you have an uninvited guest stalking your movement.  There are many features on these apps that will allow you to set up others to contact when you are in a vulnerable situation.  You don't have time to dial the police you can push a button an activate GPS location and record what is happening around you or to you.  One app lets you hold down a button until your safe.  Then it can be released and a pin entered that turns this alarm off, otherwise the police are on there way.

   5.  The Weather Channel (Google Playstore and App Store)

Need to know how to dress or even if you want to venture outside today.  The Weather Channel app will keep you up-to-date with the latest temperature and forecast for your area.  Easy to use and a very handy app.

   6.  Instant Heart Rate (Google Play Store)  Heart Rate Camera (App Store)

 Ever worry about your heart rate, feel palpitations, or experience chest pain? You can go purchase a pulse ox which will give you an accurate reading of your heart rate and oxygen level, or if you are just worried about your heart rate, you can download one of these apps depending upon your device.  They are just as accurate and will track your heart rate as well.  You can even use options that will display what you were doing when a problem occurs.  This information is very handy to take to your next doctors visit.
